J for Juxtaposed

Here are some pictures for you that I think shows the juxtaposition. A comparison creates the contrast that is prompted by the title and I hope they justify the theme.

In the air or on the ground

Night and Day

Highs and Lows

Old and New

Dark and Light

Sun and Shade

Barren or Green

Real or Reflection

Alone or Together

Tall or Short ,  Stripes or Spots,    Black-White or Color

Strength

Life is bitter, it is also sweet.
It's always full of challenges that we need to feat.

Love can be unexpressed, it can be explicit.
It's always misunderstood to hurt, but if you think it's actually people who inflict.

Choices aren't always easy, and it isn't always in plenty.
If you don't want to regret, then never make it hasty.

Time can be your enemy, It can also heal.
If it's not your moment, then there is no zeal.

Sometimes it's faith, the other times it's fate.
For all those times I pray to god for a little abate.

I For Illuminate

Pictures of Seattle's illuminated skyline.

It is necessary for darkness and light to co-exist in order to understand the meaning of "Illuminate".

Intelligence is a fire that illuminates your mind and gives a halo effect.

Our Humble Ganesha

Normally we use our regular Ganesha idol that we have at home for Ganesha Chaturthi Pooja. But this year in addition to that I attempted to make one. Well, not really using clay or something but using fresh produce from the grocery store.

I had no plans of making one until the previous evening it just occurred to me that I could carve a ganpati on a huge watermelon. I am creative to an extent but don't have very artistic hands. Carving seem to be a little far fetched given the time and zilch experience I have in fruit carvings!

I had asked my husband to pick up a huge watermelon on his way home from work. In the meantime as I thought more about it my confidence in attempting an artistic Ganpati carving was diminishing.
Lack of confidence forced me to think of a backup plan. So  I quickly prepared a list of items that I wanted and called my husband to add more items along with the huge watermelon.

So, what did I come up with? See for yourself :)

Our humble Ganesha made out of fruits and vegetables.

1) Green apple for head where I carved the eyes, eyebrows and stuck in some googly eyes that I borrowed from my son's craft items.

2) For Ears, umbrella and hands were made using green bell peppers.

3) For Trunk, I carved a portion of cucumber and shaped like it.

4) For Belly/Torso, Just used a small size watermelon as is.

5) For Legs, I used bottom part of Japanese Eggplant, But you can also use Zucchini if shape looks right.

Used toothpicks to assemble and fasten each part and pieces.

Of course a few decoration with Bindi and Fruits (Grapes) mala and Mukut (Crown) using grapes, strawberry and Zucchini.

Made Ganesha's favorite Modak's  steamed (rice powder dough covering with coconut+jaggery filling) and fried (All purpose flour covering with  coconut+jaggery filling).

I shaped/cut all the parts and kept them in my fresh produce containers and placed in the refrigerator.
The following morning before our sthapana and pooja we assembled and decorated it.

Here is a pic from the year 2012 - I made this ganesha face (on the tray) using Rice.

So, what do you think?

H for Homeowner and Home Decor

After living in 3 different continents (Asia, Europe and America), the journey from being a renter to a homeowner has been longer than what I had envisioned. I was born and raised in India and I like to call Mumbai "My Hometown". I moved to Cyprus after my wedding to be with my husband. Since then together we have moved 8 apartments and 5 corporate rentals. Finally we decided to put down our roots here in Washington (beautiful pacific northwest, nicknamed as Evergreen State) and became homeowners.

As a home decor enthusiast I have always loved the idea of moving into different apartments (of course sans the physical move) and enjoy my time adorning them. It was difficult to work up all my decor and design ideas and imaginations with given limitations and rules of renting. Here are  pictures from some of our rentals that we have lived in where in I tried to make it a place we could call home.

While owning a home is probably more expensive than renting, home ownership does provide more stability. Since I am no longer subject to the landlord's whims, I took this blank canvas and put our heart and soul and DIY efforts to make this house a warm and inviting home not just for us but for our visitors too  :). I call our decor style "Classy Contemporary" it's a little fancier and specific word for "Transitional style decor". While this task of decorating and re-decorating is a continuous one, here are some pictures to show how we have decorated some of the spaces in our home sweet home that shows as of today. I can't promise they would look the same 5 years from now, cos, I love change my decor. It's like a therapy for me I guess :)
